The earliest finds of apples come from the pile dwelling settlements on Lake Constance and are around 5,000 years old. However, the Romans brought the actual fruit growing to Lake Constance. Later the monasteries, in particular Salem Abbey, dealt with techniques for fruit refinement, and in the 17th and 18th centuries the landlords also promoted fruit growing as an important contribution to the nourishment of the population.
Besides a view into history the Bodenseeobst-Museum shows how today's orchards came into being and how the brand name Bodensee-Obst established itself with railway construction. In other small departments, information is also provided on breeding and care, fruit types, crop protection, harvesting and finally the various options for processing the delicious fruit. And the little guests learn all there is to know about the apple from the museum's funny Apfelkrabb.
