A look into the past

The term "Linzgau" goes back to the Latin derivation of the Celtic river name "Lentia", which originated as Linzer Aach in the north of the region and flows into Lake Constance under the name Seefelder Ach near Unteruhldingen.
Archaeological finds already document a settlement in the Stone Age, the first pile dwellings on the lakeshore date from the Neolithic Age and grave finds date from Celtic times. Thereafter, the Linzgau also belonged to the sphere of influence of the Roman Empire, before Alemannic tribes settled here. The Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus mentions a tribe in the 4th century AD, which is named after the Celtic river name "Lentienser" and is described in the historical sources as particularly raucous ....

But don't worry, the Lentienser of today know how to behave well.

Small profile of the region

Significant cultural monuments, such as Salem Castle and Heiligenberg Castle or the Baroque pilgrimage church Birnau, can be found here as well as numerous art historical gems in the individual places. Several small museums provide you with an insight into everyday life and the working world of days gone by.

Especially as a nature lover, you will experience a true paradise in the holiday region Bodensee-Linzgau with the idyllic Aachtobel, incidentally Germany's oldest nature reserve, various natural monuments and biotopes, which can best be seen by food or discover with a bike. The hikers and cyclists are offered an extensive, well-signposted network of trails and interesting themed trails, which often include wonderful views of the Linzgau landscape, Lake Constance and the Alps.

And what could be nicer than to complete an eventful vacation day with a delicious meal and a good glass of wine? The "Linzgau cooks", the participants of the marketing community "Salemertal genießen" and numerous farmers pamper you with fresh, seasonal products from the region all year round.

Five municipalities - one region

The holiday resorts of Frickingen, Heiligenberg, Herdwangen-Schönach, Owingen and Salem have joined together to form the Bodensee-Linzgau Tourismus e.V., in order to present their guests with a variety of experiences and attractions of the region and the entire Lake Constance from a single source. And the friendly hosts of these places offer everything from hotels to farm holidays at a fair price-performance ratio.
